Statement on the Conversion of Hagia Sophia to Mosque
We are deeply grieved to learn the Council of State of Turkey has decided to convert the famed Hagia Sophia into a mosque. This sacred place once served as the Byzantine Emperor’s main Cathedral. Till today, it stands as a testament of religious pluralism for the entire world, especially the country of Turkey.
It is our firm belief such a decision will have a major impact on religious pluralism in Turkey, and the rest of the world. We pray that the existing status quo will remain so Hagia Sophia may continue to stand as a pillar of inclusion and inter-religious dialogue.
