Diocesan Metropolitan Receives Mar George Cardinal Alencherry on July 23, 2012
His Grace Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, Diocesan Metropolitan of the Northeast American Diocese, hosted a luncheon in honor of Mar George Cardinal Alencherry, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church.
Mar George Alencherry is the eleventh Indian and fourth Syro-Malabar Prelate to become a Cardinal of the Catholic Church in February 2012.
When Pope John Paul II established the diocese of Thuckalay on 11th November 1996 Mar George Alencherry was appointed its first bishop. He was ordained bishop on 2nd February 1997 at Thuckalay by Mar Joseph Powathil, the then archbishop of Changanacherry.
As Bishop Mar George Alencherry served the Syro-Malabar Church in his capacity of the secretary of the Synod of Bishops and chairman of the Syro-Malabar Major Archiepiscopal Commission for Catechism. He has also served as Chairman of the Commission for Laity of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI).
Metropolitan Mar Nicholovos received Cardinal George Alencherry at the Chancery of the Northeast American Diocese in Muttontown, New York. Also present to received the Cardinal were, His Grace Geevarghese Mar Coorilos of Mumbai Diocese, Chancery Staff, Director for Public Relations, Diocesan Council Members, and Managing Committee Members.
On behalf of the clergy and faithful of the Northeast American Diocese, Metropolitan Mar Nicholovos offered his prayers and felicitation to Mar George Cardinal Alencherry.
Along with the Cardinal, His Grace Mar Jacob Angadiath, Bishop of St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Diocese of Chicago, and His Excellency, Thomas Mar Eusebius, Exarch of the Malankara Exarchate of the United States, clergy and laity of the Catholic Church were also present on the occassion.
