Diocesan Young Women's (GROW) Conference Held

G.R.O.W. Ministry held a one-day conference for young women of the Northeast American Diocese at Sts. Basilios-Gregorios Orthodox Church, North Plainfield, NJ on Saturday, April 27, 2013. Women from Toronto to Virginia attended the one-day conference.

The theme of the conference was "Empowered through Christ" and the theme verse was Proverbs 31:25: "She clothes herself with strength and dignity and rejoices in the last days."

The speaker of the conference was Presvytera Dr. Kyriaki Fitzgerald, a professor at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. She was accompanied by her husband Fr. Thomas Fitzgerald, the Dean of Holy Cross Seminary. Presvytera focused on a woman's self-image:"Shame tells us that we are junk; that we are worthless. Shame is a weapon/tool of manipulation. The person that God wants us to be is derailed by toxic shame....it is possible to swim in false definitions of who we are." The talks, the group discussions, and other activities encouraged women to find strength in Christ, and live as faithful women of God.

H.G. Zachariah Mar Nicholovas delivered the presidential address, visited various workshops, and participated in the question and answer session.

Workshops were conducted by Rev. Fr. Gheevarghese John (How to GROW with Scripture), Rev. Dn Gheevarghese (Abu) Koshy (How to GROW stronger in the Lord), Mrs. Bincy Thomas (How to GROW in the world), Ms. Ceena Varghese (Chosen and Changed) and Ms. Suja Mathews (How to GROW out of abuse).

The conference ended with a half hour devoted to spiritual reflection. During this time each participant wrote down a prayer request, which was shared with another participant and the priests. The clergy prayed for each participant at the altar while the participants also prayed for each other. A participant commented that "the prayer time was very much needed."

The mission of G.R.O.W. ministry is to help women be active in their Orthodox faith and to deepen their relationship with our Lord, Savior and King, Jesus Christ, despite the challenges they face in their daily lives.

Please remember the ministry in your daily prayers.
