Annual Diocesan Parents’ & Couples’ Conference
Saturday, May 24th, 2014, more than 175 people from various parts of the Diocese,
gathered for the annual Diocesan Parents' & Couples' Conference at St.
Mary’s Orthodox Church, Staten Island, New York. The theme of the
conference was “Finding Hope in the Modern Christian Family”. The keynote
speaker was Rev. Fr. Dr. Ninan V. George, Vicar of St. Gregorios Orthodox
Church of Elmhurst, Illinois.
conference began with prayers, led by our Diocesan Metropolitan, His Grace
Zachariah Mar Nicholovos. Rev. Fr. T. A. Thomas, Vice President of the
Marth Mariam Samajam and Vicar of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, Staten Island,
offered a brief welcome and introduction. Mrs. Shiny Raju, the Parents’ &
Couples’ Conference Coordinator, welcomed all the clergy and conference
participants in her opening remarks. His Grace Zachariah Mar Nicholovos,
Metropolitan, the presidential address.
After a powerful address by the main speaker, Rev. Fr. Dr. Ninan K. George,
participants were divided into groups by their respective areas for group
discussions. Some of the questions that were discussed in the groups were the
following, ‘What is the role of every family member in creating a model
Christian family?’ and ‘How important is it to have effective communication
among family members?’
afternoon session, participants were given a choice of attending two different
workshops. ‘Meditation Techniques’ was led by Rev. Fr. Vijay Abraham Thomas,
Assistant Vicar of Sts. Baselios-Gregorios Orthodox Church of North Plainfield.
And the other workshop was ‘Child Development & Positive Parenting’
led by Dr. Sarah Kuriakose Chacko, a clinical psychologist from St. Mary’s
Orthodox Church of Bronx, NY.
the workshops, participants gave a brief synopsis of the group discussion
responses. Mrs. Jessey Mathew, General Secretary of the Martha Mariam Samajam,
gave special recognition and thanks to all the participants, speakers, the
hardworking Samajam Committee and to the host church.
His Grace Zachariah Mar Nicholovos concluded the conference
with prayers and benediction.
