Yearend Charitable Activities of MMVS

The members of Marth Mariam Vanitha Samajam (MMVS) of Northeast American Diocese have been very active in charity activities this year. They pulled their resources together region by region, reaching out and touching the lives of at least a tiny fraction of the vulnerable and the needy that do not have even the basic necessities of life. The members of MMVS are proud to have extended a helping hand to those needy ones. Many thanks are due to all those who pitched in to help at all levels.

Rockland and Upstate Region

The members also chose to help the soup kitchen run by Christ Episcopal Church in Suffern, NY for their activity. The number of members, representing the various parishes, who spent the entire morning at this Facility was quite impressive. They not only helped to cook, and serve lunch but also cleaned up the whole place. They also donated money towards the procurement of food for the soup kitchen.

New Jersey and Staten Island Region

Members of this region came together to the aid of people both at Thanksgiving and Christmas time. They joined with Robert Wood Johnson Hospital and adopted 6 families in need for Thanksgiving. They donated baskets with goodies necessary for a Thanksgiving dinner to each family. They also hosted a Christmas dinner for the homeless at the Elizabeth Coalition Center, Elizabeth NJ. Some members not only served but also participated in this dinner and all of them felt very blessed. The shelter had a wish list of the items they needed. The MMVS members were able to buy some of the items and present those to the shelter as well.

Boston, Bronx, Connecticut and Westchester Region

This region chose a homeless shelter in New Rochelle for their yearend activity. They donated food items in addition to organizing a warm clothes drive. Both activities were welcomed by the shelter enthusiastically.

Baltimore, Washington DC, Virginia and North Carolina Region

This region undertook charitable activities in four separate areas of the region.

Good Shepherd Alliance:

This is a Christian non-profit organization providing help and hope for the homeless and those in need through emergency and transitional housing and outreach services, leading to self-sufficiency and self-worth. The region supplied this group with diapers, cleaning materials, laundry powder and non-perishable food.

Grassroots Crisis Services:

This organization operates a 24 hour crisis intervention and supporting counseling hotline. Individuals may call for a variety of reasons including suicide, family problems and shelter needs. This group was given gift certificates for food, and nonperishable food items.

DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence:

The mission of DCCADV is to build a community where domestic violence is replaced with human dignity. This organization has a wish list. Our members brought items on this list so that they can be distributed though the agency.

Capital Area Food bank:

The mission of the Capital Area Food Bank is to feed those who suffer from hunger in the Washington Metro area by acquiring food and distributing it through its network of partner agencies. MMVS joined forces with GROW for this Venture.

In addition, two regions recognized the need for financial assistance in our own community by providing some relief to two families in need after consulting the Vicar of the parish concerned.
