Raging fire destroys historic New York City church
A fire engulfed Saint Sava Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, on the evening of Sunday, May 1st. Just earlier that day well over 700 Serbian Orthodox faithful filled the historic church, to celebrate the Feast of the Resurrection. Thankfully, no one was inside the church during the four alarm fire.
His Grace Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, Metropolitan sent a letter to His Grace Bishop Mitrophan, the Bishop of the Eastern Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church, expressing the prayers and solidarity of the Northeast American Diocese during this difficult time.
Saint Sava's Cathedral was originally known as the Trinity Chapel of the Episcopal Church. The Serbian Orthodox Church purchased the chapel from the Episcopal Diocese of New York in 1943.
