Metropolitan Elected into WCC Executive Committee

His Grace Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, Metropolitan was unanimously elected into the Executive Committee of the World Council of Churches during the Central Committee meeting in Trondheim, Norway.

This is the first time in more than two decades that the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church has been elected on the Executive Committee. His Grace Dr. Paulose Mar Gregorios, Metropolitan of blessed memory, was the last person who represented the Church on this committee as an elected member.

The Executive Committee's appoints programme staff, monitors ongoing work, and supervises the budget approved by the Central Committee. The Central Committee of the WCC elects twenty of its members to serve on the Executive Committee, along with the Central Committee officers - moderator, two vice-moderators, the general secretary - as well as the moderators of its programme and finance committees.

In November 2013, His Grace Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, Metropolitan was nominated into the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) brings together churches, denominations and church fellowships in more than 110 countries and territories throughout the world, representing over 500 million Christians including most of the world's Orthodox churches, scores of Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist and Reformed churches, as well as many United and Independent churches.
