Metropolitan Expresses Condolences to the Orthodox Church in America

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



Metropolitan Zachariah Mar Nicholovos expressed his condolences to His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon, the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, on the falling asleep of His Beatitude Metropolitan Herman. 

Metropolitan Herman was consecrated to the episcopacy at Holy Resurrection Cathedral, Wilkes-Barre, PA on February 10, 1973 with the title of Bishop of Wilkes-Barre, serving as an auxiliary of the Diocese of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania.  In addition to his ministry within the Diocese of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania, he served as Temporary Administrator of the Diocese of the West in 1975 and Temporary Administrator of the Diocese of New England in 1978. Following the death of Archbishop Kiprian, he was elected Bishop of Philadelphia on March 17, 1981 and rector of Saint Tikhon Seminary the following May. In 1994 he was elevated to the rank of Archbishop by the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America.

Following the retirement of Metropolitan Theodosius in April 2002, Metropolitan Herman was elected Primate of the Orthodox Church in America in Orlando, Florida.  His Beatitude was enthroned on September 8, 2002 at Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and later retired in September 2008.

In Metropolitan Nicholovos' letter to Metropolitan Tikhon, he shared, "It was the graciousness of His Beatitude, which helped strengthen our witness on this continent through the theological and pastoral formation offered to our clergy at both St. Vladimir’s and St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminaries.  We can never forget his love, concern and willingness to help our Church in North America."

Metropolitan Herman retired as the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America in September 2008 His Beatitude fell asleep in the Lord on September 6, 2022.
