The Northeast American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church will solemnly commemorate the 13th Memorial of His Grace Mathews Mar Barnabas, Metropolitan on December 9th. Barnabas Thirumeni was a beloved spiritual father whose life of profound humility, prayer, and compassion continues to inspire the faithful across generations.
His Grace, who served as the founding Metropolitan of the Northeast American Diocese, is remembered as a shepherd who guided countless souls through his gentle counsel, unwavering faith, and simple life rooted deeply in Christ. Even more than a decade after his repose, his memory remains a source of strength and encouragement to clergy, faithful, and the wider ecumenical community.
As per the Kalpana of Metropolitan Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, memorial observances will be held across all parishes of the Northeast American Diocese on Sunday, December 14th, with special prayers offered during the Holy Qurbana.
His Grace Mathews Mar Barnabas is especially remembered for his fatherly presence, and his deep love for Scripture. Many continue to cherish their personal encounters with him, recalling his warm blessing, encouraging smile, and gentle words that always pointed to the love of Christ. Vailya Thirumeni's enduring spiritual legacy—his love for worship, his commitment to pastoral care, and his example of quiet holiness, continue to be cherished by clergy and faithful alike.
As our Diocese gathers in prayerful remembrance, Metropolitan Nicholovos reminds the clergy and faithful "we are invited to honor Thirumeni’s memory by recommitting ourselves to a life of prayer, humility, and service—virtues he embodied so fully."
May the prayerful intercession our Vailya Thirumeni strengthen us, and preserve the Diocese he so deeply loved.
